The Best Windward Oahu Beaches
There are many great beaches on Windward Oahu, and it can be hard to decide which one to visit. Each beach has its own unique charm and offers something different to visitors. In this blog post, we will explore some of the best beaches on Windward Oahu and tell you a little bit about each one. Whether you're looking for a quiet spot to relax or want to catch some waves, Oahu will have a beach fit for your needs!
Waimea Bay
Families and tourists flock to Waimea Bay in the summertime to take advantage of the calm weather and beautiful water. The bay is full of people swimming, snorkeling, and playing in the shore break. A large rock on one side of the bay is popular with cliff divers, and an ancient Hawaiian temple can be seen in the hills above.
The Quicksilver Big Wave Invitational is an event that can only be held during the winter months, from December 1 to February 28, when the conditions for waves are monitored each day. For this tournament, waves must reach at least 30 or 40 feet in height before the event can be held. The last event was back in 2004 but hopefully, with a crazy winter swell this year, we'll see another one soon. At Waimea Bay, there are picnic areas, phones, showers, and restrooms along with lifeguards always on duty to make sure everyone stays safe while they're enjoying the beach.
Lanikai Beach - Complete Lanikai Beach Guide
The Lanikai Beach is unsurprisingly beautiful, with sandy shores, palm trees, and clear waters as far as the eye can see. East of Oahu lies Kailua Beach Park; just past it is a small stone monument that reads "Lanikai" in big, friendly letters.
This beach is accessible from the roadside, and there are signs pointing to the main public access point. There are also smaller access points along the road. Please note that Lanikai is a residential area, and many beach access points here are privately owned.
As you look out at the bright blue ocean and the small islands in view, it's like seeing a postcard come to life. The only sound you'll hear is the gentle waves crashing against the shore. Kick back with a good book or play in Lanikai Beach's pure waters. If you're feeling active, watch some windsurfing or kiteboarding, or try out the activities yourself. Regardless of your plans, this beach's beauty will make your time here unforgettable.
Kailua Beach - Complete Kailua Beach Guide
Kailua Beach Park is the perfect place to spend an entire day by the water, with its long stretch of sand, shady trees, and calm waves that are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The beach has plenty of parking space compared to other beaches, but as a general rule of thumb, it is best to go early in the day to make sure you grab a spot before the rush. They also have bathrooms and shower facilities for visitors' convenience and several picnic areas. For grab-and-go, Kalapawai Market sells amazing sandwiches along with a wide variety of beverage and snack options.
There are some kayak rental options nearby where you can paddle out to the famous Moke islands and see what they have to offer, or just enjoy paddling out in the ocean. Kailua Beach is also well known on Oahu for its fantastic sunrises, so be sure to get there real early if you're looking to see a sunrise and take pictures.
Waimanalo Bay Beach - Waimanalo Bay Beach Important Information
If you want to get away from Honolulu for a bit, Waimanalo Bay Beach is the place for you. Just take Kalanianaole Highway (Route 72) and be careful not to miss the beach that will be hidden behind the trees. This beach is perfect if you're looking to camp, barbecue, shower, or just escape a heatwave. And stargazing fans - rejoice! You'll finally be able to see all constellations without light pollution obstructing your view.
Waimanalo Bay Beach is the perfect place to relax and take a walk, without being bombarded by people. The waves are just enough to build excitement, but not enough to be intimidating.
