A honu world: A Guide to sea turtles on Oahu
Sea turtles are found abundantly across Oahu and all the Hawaiian Islands. The best way to see them is often from the water itself!
sea turtles on Oahu
The main species of sea turtle that is most common to see in the Hawaiian islands is called the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle or Honu in Hawaiian. Its common name refers to the color of the turtle’s fat tissue and not the outer color of its shell or skin. The scientific name for this turtle is Chelonia mydas.
Where can I see Sea Turtles on Oahu?
Although these sea turtles are migratory creatures with the main nesting season occurring from April-October, sea turtles can still be found in the waters off of Oahu year-round. No matter the time of year, the best way to see turtles is to be in or around the water. Snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking all offer some of the best opportunities to see Honu while in Hawaii. Turtles are hungry and they commonly poke their heads out of the water when they are feeding.
Certain beaches like Laniakea on the north shore have become known as “turtle beaches” because this they are common turtle nesting grounds where the turtles will beach themselves. However, Honu can be found off almost any beach off of Oahu. Many times, places that become well known as turtle nesting grounds become overwhelmed with visitors and are soon no longer places that the turtles want to nest at.
Tips for seeing sea turtles
As mentioned before, the best way to see sea turtles is from the water itself and not when the turtles are nesting. The biggest thing to help make sure that you see a turtle is to maximize the time that you are in or on the water.
How to be respectful of sea turtles
Keep your distance: Make sure that you give the sea turtles at least 15ft of space
Swim away: If sea turtles swim towards you, try to maintain your minimum of 15ft distance
Do not pet or touch the turtles: Sea turtles are an endangered species and touching them can transfer harmful germs
